Linux: ext3 Boot-Time Checks

This helps with disabling of lengthy boot-time checks on an EXT3 partition.

Check the setup

tune2fs -l /dev/sdaX
...
Mount count: 2
Maximum mount count: 25
...

To turn off the checks, set the maximum count to 0 with the “-c” option.

tune2fs -c 0 /dev/sdXY

However, the previous is not recommended. It’s better to increase the maximum amount to a higher integer.

tune2fs -c 100 /dev/sdXY

As the previously describe does no prevent for last check time expiration, you can use:

tune2fs -T YYYYMMDD /dev/sdXY

pointing to the current date before system restart.

Most probably, the most suitable solution is to reach a compromise by setting up a time frame check (e.g., one month):

tune2fs -c 0 -i 1m /dev/sdXY
