Linux: ext3 Data Recovery

A simple manual, how to recover deleted files from a specific disk or partition formated as EXT3…

Software Installation

Just install foremost application:

emerge -av foremost

Backup

Backup the selected disk or partition to an image file

dd if=/dev/sdXY of=/mnt/data/SDXY.img

Create a backup directory (replace the /backup/dir with a real one)

mkdir /backup/dir

Recovery

And start the recovery process…

foremost -i /mnt/data/SDXY.img -o /backup/dir

All “known” files are recovered based in its extention in /backup/dir.
